Monday musing...

I'm a big fan of Ray Dalio's book 'Principles'.

One area that struck with me is how he believes that the path to success in whatever you’re attempting takes place in 5 distinct steps. If you can do those five things well, you stand a much better chance of succeeding.

 The 5-Step Process

  1. Goals: Pick what you’re aiming for. Make it scary and challenging. This will determine the actions you take.

  2. Problems: The bumps in the road that you encounter as you move towards your goals.

  3. Diagnosis: What you take from your challenges and how you diagnose the problems in a calm, analytical way (not an easy thing to do!).

  4. Design: Taking what you’ve learned, designing a plan, and applying it to get you to move forward.

  5. Doing: Perhaps the most crucial part? Planning, analysis and strategy can only take you so far. Without action, nothing happens.

As you move out of stage 5, you'll likely come up against new problems, and the cycle will begin again.

Ray argues that the path to success is not a linear line that goes straight up, but instead is a series of ups and downs and loops back and forwards. As long as the general direction is up and progress, that’s what we should be aiming for.

I find this helps me manage the ups and downs of moving towards my own goals.

It’s a great book by a hugely successful person. Well worth a read!
